The Gender Centre

The Gender Centre provides services to people with gender issues. The Gender Centre is also committed to educating the public and service providers about the needs of people with gender issues. They offer a wide range of services to people with gender issues, their partners, families and friends in NSW.

Accommodation

 

Twenty10

A youth and family service for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender young people. Twenty10 provides supported medium-term accommodation for 16-24 year olds and offers case management, support, resources and referrals to over 18 year olds. If you are between 12 and 18 years old, Twenty10 can provide family mediation and counselling.

If you are aged between 12 and 24 and you are experiencing domestic violence, you could call Twenty10 to talk about your options. The Service does not provide crisis accommodation, but they can help you with resources and referrals.

Community health centres

General counselling may be available from some community health centres. Many of these will have experience with domestic violence and some will be experienced working with same sex domestic violence. To contact your nearest community health centre, look in the white pages under C.

Some community health centres, but not all, have designated domestic violence counsellors. However, they are not spread evenly across the areas and you do need to be living within the catchment area of the centre to use its services. Contact your nearest community health centre to find out if there is a domestic violence counsellor.

The following services provide counselling for people in same sex relationships experiencing domestic violence:


St Vincent’s Community Health Service (Darlinghurst and Waverley centres)

Offers a General Counselling Service for people living or working in the inner city and eastern suburbs area. Counsellors are experienced in working with same sex domestic violence issues.

The Southern Sydney Domestic Violence Counselling Unit is located in Rockdale. This service offers counselling for women living in the St George/Southern Sydney area who are experiencing domestic violence.

The Gay Men’s Domestic Violence Counselling Service

The Bankstown Health Service, Gay Men’s Domestic Violence Counselling Service offers counselling for gay men living or working in South Western Sydney area who are experiencing domestic violence.

Deli Women and Children’s Centre

A free, lesbian friendly service, the Deli Women and Children’s Centre provides information, referral and individual counselling for women experiencing domestic violence. The Centre also runs groups for children who may have witnessed or experienced domestic violence and will be running a support group for lesbians experiencing violence in their relationship.

Inner City Legal Centre

Offers legal advice on a range of topics including Apprehended Violence Orders. The Gay and Lesbian Legal Service operates out of this centre on Wednesday evenings from 4pm (appointment only). Telephone advice is also possible if you live outside of Sydney but please make an appointment to speak with a solicitor.
